Which ministry has overall responsibility? Ministry of the Interior

TThe Ministry of Interior is responsible for public order, safety and security. It covers border management, administers the entry and stay of non-EU citizens and takes actions regarding refugees.

It is also in charge of identity documents, travel documents, driving licenses and registration of population.

Are there other ministries involved? Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family

The Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family deals with labour-law relations, labour inspections, social insurance, old-age pension schemes, social and legal protection of children and state social benefits.

The most relevant organisations within the Ministry are:

  • The Department for Migration and Integration of Foreigners;
  • The Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family with its local (district) Labour offices;
  • The National Labour Inspectorate;
  • The Social Insurance Agency.
Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports

The Ministry of Education is in charge of elementary, secondary and higher education, educational facilities, lifelong learning, science and of the state's support for sports and youth.

The Ministry's website provides information about the system of education, Slovak language courses, scholarships and recognition of diplomas.

Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs is responsible for developing relationships with authorities and representatives of foreign states in Slovakia and abroad.

It is in charge of foreign policy, including security policy, bilateral relations, economic co-operation, culture, science, technology and education.

It also legalises documents (higher consular legalisation) issued in a foreign country for their use in the Slovak Republic.

Slovak diplomatic missions (embassies and consulates) are the points of contact for visa applications and residence permit applications.

What are the implementing agencies? Ministry of Interior

Bureau of Border and Foreign Police of the Police Force Presidium

The Bureau is responsible for controlling the borders, countering irregular migration and smuggling of migrants, granting residence permits and visas to foreigners, returns and administrative expulsions of foreigners, and to a certain extent also the asylum procedure and the Dublin Regulation implementation.

Migration Office of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic

The Migration Office deals with granting asylum and subsidiary protection, is in charge of asylum seekers, integration of persons under international protection, unaccompanied minors applying for asylum and the Dublin Regulation implementation.

Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family

The Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family

The Central Labour Office is in charge of the register of unemployed job seekers, the register of vacancies, education and preparation for the labour market and providing counselling services.

Local Labour Offices

The Local Labour Offices issue work permits and confirmations on the possibility to fill vacancies.
